WALHALLA, S.C. — A man accused of dropping a 22-month-old girl earlier this year, causing her death, and pushing her 3-year-old her sister into something this week, causing skull fractures, has been arrested in South Carolina.

Oconee County Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Watt said 25-year-old Matthew Jason Chappell of Westminster has been charged with homicide by child abuse and child abuse inflicting serious injury.

Watt said investigators were called to Oconee Memorial Hospital Tuesday evening about child abuse case involving a 3-year-old girl with skull fractures.

Watt said that prompted officials to re-examine the June 11 death of a 22-month-old Gwynee Ann-Marie Hess at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Watt said Chappell was not the girls’ father, but lived with their mother.

It was not known if Chappell has a lawyer.
