GIBSONTON, Fla. — Three people are dead after a man drove the wrong way on a major interstate on Florida’s west coast.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened southeast of Tampa on I-75 at around 10 p.m. Thursday.

Twenty-one-year-old Justin Lakin was driving north in the southbound lanes in a Toyota Corolla when he crashed into a Ford Focus driven by Lashay Waiters, who was 24.

Lakin, Waiters and Waiters’ passenger, Yvette Alexandre, were taken to a nearby hospital, where they died. All three people were wearing their seatbelts.

It’s unknown when Lakin began driving the wrong way up the interstate.

The crash is under investigation.
