LEXINGTON, N.C. — A North Carolina couple is accused by police of failing to provide care for a 5-year-old child and three pit bulls in their home.

The Lexington Police Department told local media outlets that 23-year-old Rayne Stevenson and 25-year-old Wesley Darrious Stevenson are charged with cruelty to animals and misdemeanor child abuse. It’s not known if they have attorneys.

An arrest report says the couple failed to provide food, water and care for three pit bulls, two of which were living in metal kennels inside the home and were covered in feces and urine. Authorities say the third ate its own tail and was euthanized because it was undernourished.

The couple was also charged with child abuse because of the living conditions, which included animal urine and feces throughout the home.
