RUTLAND, Vt. — A Vermont man accused of groping a woman in her sleep has pleaded not guilty.

The Rutland Herald reports 33-year-old Matthew New pleaded not guilty Monday to a felony charge of lewd and lascivious conduct.

According to officials, police responded to a call from a woman in September. Police say New groped the woman as she slept and touched himself.

Police say New told investigators he thought the woman was awake and that he was trying to hold her hand. Authorities say New claimed he left the Chittenden home when the woman asked him to leave.
