WENDELL, Idaho — Idaho law enforcement officials say a 3-year-old Wendell boy accidently shot his 5-year-old sister in the arm.

Gooding County Sheriff Shaun Gough says the boy climbed onto a freezer chest to reach a loaded 9 mm handgun sitting on the top of the fridge in their home in Wendell, about 26 miles northwest of Twin Falls.

Their mother was in the living room at the time of the Wednesday shooting.

According to Gough, the bullet went through the girl’s right arm, but did not pierce any bones.

The girl was taken to North Valley Medical Center and was released after getting stiches and a Band-Aid.

Idaho Health and Welfare and the sheriff’s office are investigating the incident.

Gough says it is unclear whether the children’s mother will face any charges.
