Franklin College

Men’s basketball team falls

Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Franklin College men opened the season with a 90-72 defeat at DePauw on Wednesday evening.

Freshman Sam Gutierrez paced the Grizzlies with 16 points. Jordan Anderson added a career-best 14 points, while Borden Kennedy and John Beineke each finished with 10.

The Grizzlies will play at Cornell College (Iowa) on Saturday night.

Football dominates HCAC awards

Not surprisingly, league champion Franklin College took home the lion’s share of All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors when the awards were announced Wednesday.

Quarterback Chase Burton was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, while Mike Leonard was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Joining Burton on the All-HCAC first team offense were receiver Deontez Alexander, running back Jordan Brown and linemen Samm Hayes, Sam Burck and Landon Johnson. On the defensive side, linebacker Austin Fleming was joined on the all-league first team by defensive backs Ryan Conner and Trace Rooks.

Seven other Grizzlies earned second-team designation.
