Historic fieldhouse hit by storm was insured for nearly $10M

MUNCIE, Ind. — School officials say a central Indiana fieldhouse that’s one of the nation’s largest high school basketball venues was insured for nearly $10 million when a severe thunderstorm damaged it recently.

The Star Press reports the historic Muncie Fieldhouse was valued at $9,858,130 on Feb. 15, when Muncie Community Schools filed a statement of values used by underwriters to calculate the policy premium.

The district’s chief financial officer, Bob Coddington, says school officials are in the insurance claims process “and how long the process will take no one knows.”

A severe thunderstorm on Nov. 5 ripped a hole in the roof of the fieldhouse and ruptured water pipes, turning the bleachers into a waterfall and flooding the hardwood basketball floor.

The historic gym’s seating capacity was 7,635.
