5 sent to hospital in head-on crash

Police are investigating a head-on crash on County Road 144 in Bargersville that sent two adults and three children to the hospital during the weekend.

Kendra Carter, 30, of Franklin, was driving west on County Road 144 near County Road 400W about 3:50 p.m. Sunday when her car crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck head-on that was being driven by Kristina Dunn, 26, of Greencastle, a Bargersville Police Department report said.

A man who was driving behind Carter told police that he saw her car drift back and forth several times, nearly going into a ditch, before crossing the center line and striking Dunn’s vehicle head-on. Carter told police that she had fallen asleep while driving, the report said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, the report said.

Dunn was trapped in the pickup truck after the crash, and it took the Bargersville Fire Department about 20 minutes to get her out of the vehicle, fire chief Jason Ramey said.

Carter had three children in the car. Bystanders had helped to get two of them out before emergency workers arrived. Carter complained of pain to her back, and one of the children, a 9-year-old boy, appeared to have a broken leg, the report said.

Carter and the children were not wearing seat belts, police said.

Carter and Dunn were taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. Carter’s three children — ages 3, 5, and 9 — were taken to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. None of their injuries were life-threatening, Ramey said.

Carter was in good condition as of Monday morning. No condition was available for Dunn, a hospital spokesperson said.

A section of County Road 144 from Morgantown Road to County Road 625W was closed for about an hour after the crash, Ramey said.
