GREECE, N.Y. — A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of an 86-year-old man during a burglary.

Police say Charles Fields died of a head injury following a break-in at his western New York home in October 2016. Fields was found by police doing a welfare check at his home in the Monroe County town of Greece. He died at a hospital three weeks later.

Omar Quarles was indicted on a number of charges in Fields’ death. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and burglary on Thursday and faces 20 to 25 years in prison.

Police say Quarles was a family friend of Fields who knew the home’s layout and what items could be stolen. Authorities say there apparently was a struggle and Quarles struck Fields on the head.
