SAN ANGELO, Texas — Authorities say a longtime Texas police officer has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at police headquarters.

The San Angelo Standard-Times reports that 53-year-old Sgt. Freddy Dietz Jr. was found dead in a private office at the San Angelo Police Department headquarters on Monday morning.

Dietz Jr. had been with the department since 1983. He was an administrative sergeant at the time of his death. Dietz Jr. had previously served as the city jailer and a D.A.R.E. officer, who spoke to students to prevent drug and alcohol use.

The Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. Texas Ranger Todd Reed of the Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting with the investigation.
