Greenwood junior starts drive to help veterans

Daily Journal staff reports

A Greenwood teen heard the veteran’s stories and wanted to help.

Andy Pollert, a junior at Greenwood Community High School, heard about a veteran who needed a new scooter.

Community members and volunteers at an Indianapolis organization where he was volunteering raised $750 to get the man a new scooter.

Pollert admired the effort and decided he wanted to do something to help veterans.

He is collecting items and money so he can send care packages to veterans at the VA hospital and to current soldiers serving overseas.

Veterans’ sacrifices have allowed Pollert to live free. Organizing this effort is the least he can do to try to pay them back, he said.

“I just wanted those veterans to know we really do appreciate them,” he said. “The least we can do is to make sure they know we appreciate them.”

The goal is to put together 500 care packages using items and donated cash.

He is looking for items such as hygiene products and games, he said.

To donate, go to Greenwood Community High School, 615 W. Smith Valley Road, Greenwood.
