Area organizations, schools offering events to honor veterans

You can grab dinner or breakfast with a veteran, buy a poppy or thank veterans at a school program.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11 and area organizations and schools are planning events to honor them.

» Artcraft Theatre will host “Honoring Our Heroes,” at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at the theater, 57 N. Main St., Franklin. Lasting Impressions, a performing group based out of Columbus will perform. Tickets are $15, but, the performance is free for veterans. The show will take audience back to 1940s New York City, where the group will try and recreate the music and atmosphere of a World War II canteen.

» Forest Lawn Funeral Home will be hosting a free luncheon for veterans and their families at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at Dye’s Walk Country Club, 2080 S. State Road 135, Greenwood. Veterans should RSVP by today at 317-535-9003.

» Greenwood VFW Post No. 5864 will sell poppies to help commemorate Veterans Day. Poppies will be sold starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 10 and 11 at Kroger stores in Greenwood and the southside, Rural King, 860 S. U.S. 31, Greenwood, Tractor Supply, 1460 U.S. 31, Greenwood and the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Clubs at Emerson Avenue and County Line Road. Money from the sales will to the post’s relief fund for veterans.

» American Legion Post No. 233, 500 Memorial Drive, Edinburgh, is hosting a dinner at 2 p.m. Nov. 12. Entertainment will be provided from 3 to 6 p.m. by Steve Jeffris.

» American Legion Post No. 205, 1200 Park Ave., Franklin will have a dinner at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the post. Reservations should be made by calling the post at (317) 738-9934.

» Christ Our Shepherd Church of the Brethren, 857 N. State Road 135, Greenwood, is having a dinner and program to celebrate veterans at 5 p.m. Nov. 12. Lieutenant Commander James E. Patton will speak. Patton served a year with members of the Oregon National Guard. He was an embedded team trainer with the Afghan National Army in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

» Tried and True Alehouse, 2800 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, is providing free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 to all veterans and active duty military personnel.

Schools all across the county are hosting events to commemorate veterans. These events are open to the public:

» Break-O-Day Elementary School, 6 p.m. Nov. 9, 900 Sawmill Road, New Whiteland.

» Whiteland Elementary School, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10, 120 Center St., Whiteland.

» Pleasant Crossing Elementary School, 3 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10, 3030 N. County Road 125 W., Whiteland.

» Greenwood Community Middle School, 8:15 a.m. Nov. 10, 1584 Averitt Road.

» Westwood Elementary School, 10 a.m. Nov. 9, 899 County Road 150W., Greenwood.

» East Side Elementary School, 9 a.m. Nov. 10, 810 E. Main Cross St., Edinburgh.

» Isom Elementary School, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 50 E. Broadway St., Greenwood. The Color Guard from John Marshall High School will present arms, second and third grade students, along with the Honor Choir will sing Patriotic songs, one student from each grade level will read an essay about veterans and a musician will play taps.

» Creekside Elementary School, 9 a.m. Nov. 10, 700 State Road 144, Franklin.

» Union Elementary School, 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 3990 W. Division Road, Bargersville.

» Webb Elementary School, 8:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 1400 Webb Court, Franklin. Fourth grade and school choir are performing. Refreshments will follow the performance.

» Franklin Community Middle School, 7:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 625 Grizzly Cub Drive. Day begins in the cafeteria with breakfast for veterans and their guests. Performances will be presented by the middle school band and choirs. Warrant Officer John Schuster will be speaking.

» Indian Creek High/Middle School, 9:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 803 Indian Meadows Drive, Trafalgar. Veterans and their guests are invited to arrive between 9 and 9:15 a.m. for coffee and registration. They are also invited to a lunch immediately following the program. Robert Smith will speak.

» Center Grove Middle School North, 9 a.m. Nov. 10, 202 N. Morgantown Road, Greenwood.

» Center Grove High School, 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 2717 S. Morgantown Road, Greenwood.
