Aspiring teachers: Apply for scholarship

Applications for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship are being accepted through Nov. 30.

The program offers 200 renewable scholarships of $7,500 each year (up to $30,000) to students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years after graduation.

Applications are available at scholartrack.in.gov.

Local VFW accepting contest entries

Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 can write an essay on patriotism to win cash.

A prize of $500 and a national award and a trip to Washington all are possible prizes in the VFW youth essay competitions.

Patriotic audio essay contest announced

High school students who submit an audio essay about patriotism and the democratic process can win cash prizes and scholarships.

The VFW is hosting the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest.

The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000, and the first-place winner from each state wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Area VFW looking for teacher of the year

The local VFW wants to nominate a teacher of the year.

The Greenwood VFW is taking nominations for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Nominations can be submitted in an essay of 350 words or less that describes why the teacher deserves the award. The essay should describe the teacher’s innovative teaching, resource development methods and dedication to education.
