NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities say an off-duty Jersey City police officer shot and killed two men who tried to rob him at gunpoint.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. Sunday in Newark.

Essex County prosecutors say the officer was dropping off an acquaintance and two children when he was approached by 19-year-old Dante Holden and 21-year-old Tymyr Wilson, both of East Orange.

One of the men apparently tried to shoot at the officer but his gun jammed. The officer then shot both men, who were pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The name of the officer has not been disclosed. It wasn’t clear if he suffered any injuries in the attempted robbery.

The shooting will be reviewed by the prosecutor’s office, which is standard procedure following police-involved shootings.
