PORTLAND, Ore. — A federal jury has found that an African American maintenance technician was subjected to a racially hostile work environment and ordered Cascade Management company to pay him $325,000 in damages.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the verdict was returned Wednesday after a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez.

Jurors ordered Cascade, a property management company that handles apartment complexes in Oregon and Washington, to pay Freddie Brown $250,000 in non-economic damages, plus $125,000 in punitive damages.

Cascade fired Brown in 2014. While Brown was awarded damages for a hostile workplace, the jury didn’t find that race was a motivating factor in his firing or that the firing was in retaliation for Brown’s complaints about Cascade site manager John Simmons.

Cascade director of operations Salvador Llerenas said in a statement the company was pleased the jury determined Brown was terminated for lawful reasons and is reviewing its legal options regarding the damages.
