NEWBURGH, N.Y. — State police say they’ve charged a 43-year-old man in connection with the slaying of a person whose remains were found in a Hudson Valley home.

Troopers say Wednesday that Christopher Smith, of Wallkill, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder.

Officials say state police started a missing person investigation in June and recently executed a search warrant at a home in the Orange County town of Newburgh, where the remains were recovered.

Police say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the person’s identification.

Smith is being held in the county jail without bail. The Legal Aid Society of Orange County says the lawyer representing Smith wasn’t available to comment on the charge.
