CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina are searching for several suspects after a college student was shot in the leg near campus.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office told local media outlets says the 19-year-old student at Western Carolina University was shot around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday at an apartment complex. A news release from the sheriff’s office said the assailant was wearing a mask.

According to the news release, deputies say the suspects are a group of men. So far, there have been no arrests.

Last week, a 17-year-old boy and 19-year-old Aja Makalo were charged with murder in the shooting of 21-year-old WCU student Jason Alexander Ray. Authorities said Ray was shot on Oct. 6 and died three days later.
