OMAHA, Neb. — A 19-year-old Omaha man has been charged in the death of his girlfriend’s baby.

Omaha television station KETV reports that Dakota Ash was arrested Thursday afternoon, two days after emergency responders were called to an Omaha apartment and found an unresponsive 1-month-old girl. The child was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

The baby’s mother, 27-year-old Heather McShannon, tells KETV that police told her Ash had hit the baby in the stomach and tried to suffocate the infant.

Ash has been charged with homicide by child abuse and his bail set at $5 million. He remained jailed Friday and could not be reached for comment.
