CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A regional managed-care mental health agency has cut its chief executive’s salary dramatically, aligning it with state government directives and following North Carolina state audits scrutinizing his compensation.
Multiple media outlets report the board of Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions voted this week to reduce CEO Richard Topping’s salary to $204,195. In the year ending June 2016, Topping made more than $600,000.
Cardinal receives several hundred million dollars in state and federal funds annually to treat people in 20 mostly-Piedmont counties. The board’s action comes a month after Cardinal asked a judge to rule it’s exempt from salary limits set by the state.
A Cardinal spokeswoman says Topping is still on the job, but board chairwoman Lucy Drake says it’s unclear how Cardinal’s leadership team will shake out given the vote.
