Juanita Ruth Hughey

INDIANAPOLIS

Juanita Ruth (Smith) Hughey, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Indianapolis, Thursday evening, October 12, 2017.

She was born January 3, 1930, in Franklin, Indiana, to Arnold and Pearl (Sparks) Smith. Juanita married Wilfrid O. Hughey on May 14, 1949. Several years later the couple relocated to Indianapolis, where he was employed at Naval Avionics Facility and she was a long-time homemaker and beloved mother to 9 children.

She loved family and was blessed with a large one. Juanita was happy when hosting and cooking for gatherings that included her own and extended family members. She was a kind and gracious host who always had a spare room for out-of-town visitors. Juanita loved to travel and visited all but one of the US states with her favorite travel companion, Wilfrid. In later years, she especially enjoyed making trips that included cabin accommodations. Juanita had a kind and giving heart, never spoke a cross word, and was loved by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Shirley and Beulah; brothers, Louis and Joseph; daughter, Patricia Fay; and her beloved husband of 57 years.

Juanita is survived by sisters, Alice (Preston) Lucas and Hazel Welch; children, Robert (Ellen) Hughey, Theresa (Rick) Reynolds, Angela Hughey, Suzette Ridgeway, Rita Cooning, Tim (Sue) Hughey, Annette Johnson, Dennis (Darlene) Hughey, and Mark (Jessica) Hughey; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Mrs. Hughey will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017, at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park East from 4-8pm.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday morning at 10am, also in the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
