Grant will fund fire safety filter purchase

A grant will allow the Greenwood Fire Department to purchase filters that will help prevent firefighters from breathing in harmful particles.

The department was awarded a $11,600 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that will pay for particle filtering firefighter hoods which block cancer cause carcinogens and other particles caused by fires, a news release said.

The hoods, which have been shown to block about 97 percent of these harmful particles, will begin being used at the start of next year, the release said.
