SALT LAKE CITY — Police say the human remains discovered last week by hikers in a mountainous area outside Salt Lake City are of a man who went missing last year.

KSL-TV reports that the body was identified as 24-year-old Blake Richardson, who was last seen near a remote lake in the Millcreek Canyon area in December 2016.

Police Lt. Brian Lohrke says the remains had mostly decomposed and were discovered near a trail. The bones were sent to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office for analysis.

Police with the department that serves communities outside Salt Lake City launched a search for Richardson after he was reported missing.

Richardson had walked away from the Salt Lake Behavioral Health Center with his dog. The dog was located in Millcreek Canyon in December.
