ELIOT, Maine — Firefighters say an elderly woman was killed and her son was injured trying to rescue her from a fire that swept through an apartment in Eliot, Maine.

Official say the fire broke out late Monday in a garage and spread to an apartment on the second floor where 83-year-old Beverly Webber lived.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland says a 57-year-old son who lived in a house attached to the garage tried to rescue his mother but ended up having to jump to safety himself, breaking his hip in the process. The man’s son escaped without injury.

Firefighters say they knew someone was in the apartment but that it was fully engulfed when they arrived. Investigators say heavy damage was hindering the investigation.
