Roncalli announces students of the month

Roncalli High School has named its students of the month.

They are: Health and physical education, Jaydon Nguyen; world languages, Kathleen Doninger; English, Bonnie Wagner; communication, Dave Schrader; social studies, Elijah Mahan; S.T.A.R.S. Program, Erik Allstatt; religious studies, Dianna Perez; science, Alexa Cline; industrial technology, Hannah Cushing; fine arts, Miriam Barajas; math, Bailey Frigon; business and technology, Matthew Looney.

Ivy Tech recognizes school partners at ceremony

Two local schools have been recognized by a community college as being partners.

Ivy Tech Community College named Central Nine Career Center the Transition to College Partner of the Year. Whiteland Community High School was named the Dual Enrollment Partner of the Year.

The awards were announced at a ceremony in September. The event provided Ivy Tech leadership the opportunity to talk about the support systems in student services available to high school students.

Youngsters encouraged to enroll in 4-H program

Children wanting to enroll in 4-H can attend a project fair to learn more.

The Johnson County 4-H Project Fair is 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 at Scott Hall at the Johnson County fairgrounds.

Potential 4-H’ers can learn about 4-H clubs, projects and can enroll in 4-H.

Online enrollment also can be done through Jan. 15 at extension.purdue.edu/johnson. The cost to join is $25.

Middle school students can enter essay contest

Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 can write an essay on patriotism in an effort to win cash.

A prize of $500 and a national award and a trip to Washington, D.C., are prizes in the VFW youth essay competitions.

Patriotic audio essay contest announced

High school students who submit an audio essay about patriotism and the democratic process can win cash prizes and scholarships.

The VFW is hosting the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest.

The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000, and the first-place winner from each state wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense- paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Area VFW naming teacher of the year

The local VFW wants to nominate a teacher of the year.

The Greenwood VFW is taking nominations for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Nominations can be submitted in an essay of 350 words or less that describes why the teacher deserves the award. The essay should describe the teacher’s innovative teaching, resource development methods and dedication to education.

Scholarship available for future teachers

Aspiring teachers can apply for a scholarship.

Applications for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship are being accepted through Nov. 30.

The program offers 200 renewable scholarships of $7,500 each year (up to $30,000) to students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years after graduation.
