HOULTON, Maine — Northern Maine might be known for its famous potatoes, but its residents are getting ready to celebrate a sweeter crop that grows at the edge of the country.

Aroostook Apple Day is Saturday in Houlton. The free event is a celebration of apples and will include workshops such as “Cidermaking for Beginners” and “Exploring for Historic Apples in Aroostook.”

There will also be apple and pear tastings, apple identification and cider pressing. Organizers say Aroostook County apple enthusiasts are also encouraged to bring and share their own favorite “known and unknown varieties that grow in the area.”

The event is being held at the Unitarian Church and Cup Cafe in Houlton. Southern Aroostook Soil & Water Conservation District is hosting the event.
