PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A former Narragansett police officer has been accused of sending sexually explicit material to a 15-year-old girl in Nebraska.

Federal prosecutors say 50-year-old Matthew Riley was indicted on a charge of transferring obscene matter to a minor.

Riley pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Providence. He was released on unsecured bond.

According to the indictment, the girl’s parents told the Nebraska State Patrol last year that their daughter had received sexually explicit online messages and photographs. The sender had claimed to be a 29-year-old physical therapist from Boston.

Investigators said they later traced the communications to an internet address and online accounts at Riley’s home.

Riley, a K9 officer, retired from the force after the FBI and Rhode Island state police searched his home and patrol car.
