MANDAN, N.D. — An historic former school in Mandan is being transformed into affordable housing.
The building through its history has served as the city’s high school, its junior high, an elementary school and a sixth-grade academy. It closed in 2009, and earlier this year was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that The Commonwealth Companies, of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, finalized its purchase of the property in late September. The building is now undergoing asbestos abatements and interior demolition.
The $6.2 million project will create 39 units of affordable housing known as Historic Apartments on 4th. Mandan’s Business Development Director Ellen Huber says renovation should be in full swing after Thanksgiving.
