SILVER CITY, N.M. — Authorities say a Silver City police officer shot and wounded a man who struck the officer’s police vehicle during a pursuit while driving an SUV stolen from the man’s mother in Las Cruces.

The New Mexico State Police says 41-year-old Michael Aguirre of Silver City was taken into custody after the collision early Thursday morning and is hospitalized for treatment of a neck wound not considered life-threatening.

State Police spokesman Carl Christiansen says the SUV struck the officer’s vehicle when the SUV made a U-turn after Silver City police took over a pursuit begun by Grant County sheriff’s deputies.

Christiansen says Aguirre was charged earlier this year in two other criminal cases and that he cut off a court-ordered ankle bracelet before alleging attacking his mother.
