CAMBRIDGE, Vt. — A truck driver has been fined more than $2,000 after his tractor-trailer unit became stuck in the tight turns on state Route 108, more commonly known as Smugglers Notch.

Police say the driver, whose name was not released, became stuck on the Cambridge side of the notch Monday morning, blocking traffic from both directions. The highway was reopened after several hours.

The narrow, windy Smugglers Notch, which is closed in the winter, connects Cambridge and Stowe.

Despite signs warning that trucks are forbidden from driving in the notch, several get stuck every year prompting sometimes expensive recoveries.

Last year, the state increased the fines for truckers who get stuck in the notch.
