BEDFORD, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Superior Court says a man who was just 15 when he fatally shot a woman while robbing her of marijuana deserves a chance at parole and should be resentenced.
Deauntay Moye, who is now 19, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the January 2015 killing of 21-year-old Stephanie Waters in January 2015.
Moye’s co-defendant, Ryan Hardwick, who was then only 15, was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison.
Bedford County prosecutors argued Moye deserved the harsher sentence because he led the robbery and fired the fatal shot. But Moye’s public defender says his age and other factors suggest he can be rehabilitated and deserves a chance at parole.
Bedford County District Attorney William Higgins says he’ll argue against parole at the re-sentencing.
