SMITHTOWN, N.Y. — Police say a man driving a minivan has died after he crashed his car into a Long Island restaurant.
The car burst into flames after it hit Casa Luis in Smithtown early Sunday morning. Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2fDWMjT ) the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and police say speed played a role in the crash.
The car also set started a fire at the Spanish restaurant, from which the owners escaped without injury. Commack Fire Chief John Barry says the force of the crash caused a gas leak.
Owner Jose Luis Estevez says he plans to reopen the restaurant. He met with his lawyer and insurance agent Sunday morning to discuss the crash and fire.
Police say the identity of the driver hasn’t been confirmed yet. Authorities continue to investigate.
