FLORENCE, Miss. — A teenager has drowned while swimming at a private lake in Mississippi.

Rankin County authorities tell news outlets that 16-year-old Jeremy Gatlin was with a group of teenagers Wednesday night.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey told WAPT-TV the group was racing to see who could swim to a pier and back. Witnesses said they turned around and saw Gatlin go under water and not resurface.

Authorities say a dive team with a sonar-equipped boat found the teenager’s body shortly before 11 p.m.
