Police: Motorist hit bicyclist, fled scene

A Trafalgar woman was arrested after deputies said she hit a bicyclist while driving Sunday evening and left without stopping.

Whitney Smith, 27, 3464 Mary Holmes Drive, was arrested on a charge of failing to stop after a personal injury accident.

A bicyclist told deputies that he was going east on County Road 300S, about two miles east of State Road 135, just before 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car traveling in the same direction, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said. The bicyclist told deputies he had been hit by the passenger side mirror, and bits of plastic and glass had broken off. He described the vehicle as a red pickup truck with a blue tarp covering up something in the truck bed, the report said.

The bicyclist had redness and was sore from being hit, but declined medical treatment, the report said.

An officer with the Franklin Police Department found the truck in the parking lot of a Franklin business. The bicyclist came and told deputies that it was the vehicle that hit him, the report said.

Smith told deputies that she thought she had struck a mailbox and didn’t see the bicyclist until after she passed him, the report said.

Smith was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. She was released on $2,000 bond.
