Joseph E. “Joe” Smith, 99, passed away Tuesday morning, September 19, 2017 at Greenwood Village South. He was a resident of Greenwood and a former resident of Brown County.

Joe was born June 12, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late Hiram and Anna (Abner) Smith.

He married Willie Mae (Marion) Smith on September 14, 1937 in Franklin. She preceded him in death on October 26, 1988, after 51 years of marriage.

He went on to marry Martha M. (McQuilling) Smith on September 2, 1990 in Seymour. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2008.

Joe retired in 1980 from General Motors in Indianapolis where he worked as a welder equipment operator for 12 years. He also worked as a carpenter for the Columbus Municipal Airport.

Joe attended the Uniontown Baptist Church and was a member of the United Autos Worker Union in Indianapolis. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, squirrel and rabbit hunting and reading his Bible.

He was a fan of Indiana University men’s basketball and the Indiana Pacers.

Joe is survived by his children, Nellie Wilson of Bargersville, Maysie Hilton of Bargersville, Geneva Watson of Franklin, Josephine Smith of Greenwood, Jerry (Vicki) Smith of Trafalgar, John Smith of Nashville, Pauline Hicks of Trafalgar and Nancy Howard of Edinburgh; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughters, Frieda Smith and Ella Mae Day; grandsons, James Sidebottom and Grant Pearson.

The Rev. Max Downs will conduct a funeral service on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Beech Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Trafalgar.
