Traffic stop leads to drug bust

A 20-year-old man told police he had been paid to take thousands of dollars worth of drugs from Franklin to Southport, when the drugs were discovered during a traffic stop.

The driver told police he had been paid nearly $1,000 to transport the drugs early Saturday.

Namneet Rai, 20, Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of dealing in a schedule IV controlled substance, dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, all felonies, and possession of a controlled substance.

About a quarter-pound of marijuana and about 1/3 of a pound of Xanax pills were found in his vehicle when a Franklin police officer stopped his car shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday for not using a turn signal and not stopping before turning at a red light, a police report said.

The number of pills weren’t counted, but could have been in the hundreds. Each pill could have a street value of $6 to $8. The street value of the marijuana was about $1,000, police said.
