Second grader donates to Riley for younger brother

The 7-year-old thought of what his brother went through and wanted to help.

Karsen Smithey’s younger brother, Cash, had surgery to correct a cleft palate at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health last summer. An idea he had resulted in a donation of $740 to the children’s hospital.

The second grader at Union Elementary School told his mother, Katie Chipman Smithey, that he wanted to help the hospital that had helped his little brother a year before. He made and set out a collection jar.

“I don’t know what sparked his interest,” she said. “We always talk about Riley and giving back and helping.”

Karsen Smithey’s goal was to raise $300, but was able to bring in $740.

The jar was passed around to family and friends, who all contributed. Social media posts garnered donations through Paypal.

In November, he will start a toy drive of new toys to give to the hospital for the holidays.
