GALLOWAY, N.J. — Authorities say a New Jersey couple abused their 2-year-old daughter in a way that a doctor said raised the girl’s diagnosis to “the level of torture.”
Atlantic County prosecutors say 33-year-old Yolanda Torres and 52-year-old Jose Velez, both of Galloway, each face two counts of child endangerment. Torres is also charged with aggravated assault.
Authorities say Torres abused her daughter July 10 but didn’t seek medical attention until she started having seizures. The child was found to have bone fractures, a brain bleed and deep burns to her hand and foot that Torres said occurred during a series of “accidents.”
A doctor concluded that the “combined physical traumas and psychological traumas raise the girl’s diagnosis to the level of torture.”
It wasn’t known if Torres or Velez have retained attorneys.
