Memorial events planned for 9/11

Community members wanting to pay their respects in memory of Sept. 11 can attend events today, the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Forest Lawn Memory Gardens

Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood will host a memorial ceremony today.

The cemetery property near State Road 135 and Olive Branch Road will have a display of 3,000 American flags that represent the first responders, civilians and military heroes of Sept. 11, 2001. The Never Forget Tribute commemoration at 6 p.m. will honor their memory at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, at 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood.

The program is free and open to the public. In addition to the flag display, an art exhibition by local middle and high school students will be available. Local officials will speak during the ceremony.

A banner will be available for the community to write notes of thanks and appreciation to local emergency workers. Each guest will receive a Sept. 11 Memorial Lapel Pin.

Greenwood VFW

Greenwood VFW Post No. 5864 also will host a remembrance luncheon for Greenwood city workers and first responders from noon to 3 p.m. at the post, 333 S. Washington St.

Meredith-Clark Funeral Home

County residents are invited to take a memorial walk to remember the events of Sept. 11.

Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown is hosting the walk at 8:30 a.m. today.

Walkers will make four stops based on events of that day. The event includes words of reflection and lowering the American flag to half mast.
