Memorial events planned for 9/11

Community members wanting to pay their respects in memory of Sept. 11 can attend a lunch or ceremony Monday.

Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood will host a memorial ceremony Monday.

The cemetery property near State Road 135 and Olive Branch Road will have a display of 3,000 American flags that represent the first responders, civilians and military heroes of Sept. 11, 2001. On Monday, the Never Forget Tribute commemoration will honor their memory. The tribute will take place at 6 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, at 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood.

The program is free and open to the public. In addition to the flag display, an art exhibition by local middle and high school students will be available. Local officials will speak during the ceremony.

A banner will be available for the community to write notes of thanks and appreciation to local emergency workers. In appreciation for attending the tribute, each guest will receive a special Sept. 11 Memorial Lapel Pin.

The Never Forget Tribute includes an appetizer reception for all guests.

Greenwood VFW Post No. 5864 also will host a remembrance luncheon for Greenwood city workers and first responders from noon to 3 p.m. at the post, 333 S. Washington St.
