1 hospitalized after construction zone crash

A Greenwood man was in critical condition after a crash in a construction zone on State Road 135.

Jesse Smith, 80, was driving south on State Road 135 about 8:30 a.m. when his vehicle struck the back end of a car, driven by Jeffery Hill, 54, of Martinsville, that was stopped due to road construction, a Bargersville Police Department report said.

Firefighters spent about 10 minutes working to get Smith out of the vehicle, Bargersville Community Fire Department Chief Jason Ramey said.

Because the accident took place about a half-mile north of a Bargersville Community Fire Department station, they were able to quickly get to the scene, he said.

Smith was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital and was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.

Since last week, the Indiana Department of Transportation has been doing resurfacing work on a stretch of State Road 135 from Bargersville to Stones Crossing Road. One lane is closed at a time during the work, and north and southbound traffic alternates driving through the construction zone at the direction of workers.
