Franklin wins three of four

Franklin acquitted itself well against a strong field at the Providence Invitational, winning three of four matches — including one over defending state champion Cathedral.

The Grizzly Cubs (12-3) took two of three sets from the Fighting Irish and also defeated Seymour and Brownstown Central. Their lone setback came against the state’s top-ranked team, the host Pioneers.

Setter Brooke Phillips totaled 69 assists, 23 kills and 18 digs on the day for Franklin. Alyvia Sundheimer had 36 kills, while Isabell Mahin added 26 kills and 21 digs. Brooklyn Peddycord had 31 digs to pace the defensive effort.

Trojans win in Louisville

Playing against the No. 4 team in Kentucky, Class 4A No. 6 Center Grove roared back from a two-set deficit for a big 17-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-13 road win on Saturday.

Ellen LeMasters finished with 31 kills for the Trojans (9-1). Emma Jones added 14 kills, while Santina Schembra collected 17 digs.

Rebels outdo Warriors

Roncalli was a 4-1 winner over Whiteland on Saturday in a match played at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium. Mateo Gonzalez, Robert Thang, Zach Wallem and Owen Spotts each found the net for the Rebels.

Grizzly Cubs fall to Owls

Franklin came up short in a home match with Seymour on Saturday, suffering a 4-1 defeat.

Grizzly Cubs edge Warriors

Josiah Rockey won a third-set tiebreaker against Corey Ullrich to lift Franklin to a 3-2 triumph over Whiteland on Saturday.

The Warriors (6-3, 2-3 Mid-State) got three-set wins in the first two singles spots from Quinten Gillespie and Caleb Scott, but the Grizzly Cubs canceled those points out by taking both doubles matches. Andy Bennett and Corbin Burton were victorious at No. 1, while Ethan Ulem and Russell Chain came out on top at No. 2.

The two teams will face off again Tuesday in the opening round of the county tournament.

Rebels swept by Guerin

Roncalli was beaten by Guerin Catholic on Saturday, 5-0. The loss drops the Rebels to 4-5 on the year.

Cross country teams place second

Paced by a first-place finish by freshman and Greenwood grad Krista Robinson, the Franklin women’s cross country team earned a second-place finish at its Sodexo Grizzly Invitational at the Blue River course.

The Grizzlies also placed second in the men’s meet, led by a fifth-place individual finish from sophomore Clayton Brumfield. Right behind him in sixth was classmate Blaine Conners.
