PEMBROKE, N.Y. — Police in upstate New York say a 10-year-old child has been seriously injured after being hit by a car.

Authorities say the crash happened around 8 p.m. Sunday in Pembroke. According to police, a vehicle struck the child on state Route 77 as he ran across the street. Police say the driver initially didn’t stop because they thought they hit a deer but then returned to the scene of the crash.
