Franklin man wins national truck title

Franklin resident Glen Kirk can now claim to be a national champion.

Kirk took first in the three-axle class at the 80th Annual National Truck Driving Championships last week in Orlando, Florida. He was making his first appearance at nationals after five years competing at the state level.

“As a rookie at Nationals, I didn’t know what to expect,” Kirk said. “It was very humbling to sit amongst the best drivers in the country.”

Winners in nine classes of competition from 50 state associations advance to compete at nationals. The qualifying round at the four-day event includes a written exam, pre-trip inspection and driving course. In the final round, participants compete in a driving course consisting of six “problems.”

Kirk is a line haul driver based out of Old Dominion’s Indianapolis service center, where he has worked since 2010. He has been driving professionally for 20 years.
