WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem Police Department has promoted an assistant chief to the top job.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that City Manager Lee Garrity announced Friday that 23-year veteran Catrina Thompson will succeed Barry Rountree, who is slated to retire at the end of August.
Thompson was assistant chief in charge of the investigative services bureau. She was among more than 20 applicants from police departments across the country seeking the job.
From the list, Thompson and another finalist attended a public forum with questions from the community on racial reconciliation, gun violence, crime prevention, their faith and defusing high-tension situations.
Thompson will take over on Sept. 1.
