BOONE, N.C. — A white supremacy group says it hung a banner at Appalachian State University in North Carolina this week.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported a group called Identity Evropa hung the banner over a campus street in Boone on Monday. Two men removed the banner a few minutes later.
The banner read “A new dawn is breaking, rise and get active, Identity Evropa.” The group claimed the banner in a Twitter message Tuesday.
The group was established last year and the newspaper said it is identified as a racist, white supremacist organization by the Anti-Defamation League and is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Appalachian State chancellor Sheri Everts said in a statement that “violence, discrimination and racism” would not be tolerated on campus.
