OXFORD, Miss. — A University of Mississippi student is in critical condition but is stable after being shot in the head at an apartment complex near campus.

Police say 23-year-old Alisha Smith was wounded after fighting with her 28-year-old boyfriend, D’Marius Madkins, early Thursday.

WMC-TV reports Madkins is accused of shooting her and Oxford police say he is being held on a charge of domestic violence-aggravated assault.

Oxford Police spokesman Chris Case says Madkins admitted having the gun and pulling the trigger. It was unknown if he’s represented by an attorney.

Smith was flown to Memphis’ Regional Medical Center, where she is in the intensive care unit.
