PROVIDENCE, R.I. — State Senate President Dominick Ruggerio is calling for an investigation into the failure of a hospital pension fund.

The Democrat requested an inquiry into Our Lady of Fatima Hospital’s pension fund in a Wednesday letter to the state attorney general and the head of the Rhode Island State Police.

Court documents say the pension fund was 90 percent funded when it was sold in 2014, but it was placed in temporary receivership earlier this month.

Ruggerio said it’s “extremely troubling that the fund would fall into receivership so quickly” and asked to find out if any mismanagement or criminal activity contributed to the failure.

The senate president says more than 2,700 of the pension fund’s participants are his constituents.

A message seeking comment from the hospital was not immediately returned.
