Autopsy shows suicide in crash

An autopsy found a Franklin man shot himself before crashing his vehicle south of Franklin Monday night.

Ryan D. Woodall, 37, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Johnson County Deputy Coroner David Lutz said.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Monday, emergency workers were called to the 2300 block of Old U.S. 31 South, between Amity and Franklin, where a vehicle had struck a tree and a parked car, according to Johnson County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Inside the vehicle, Woodall was unresponsive with a wound on the side of his head. Deputies also found a gun next to the vehicle, the report said.

Neighbors told police they heard a loud bang before the wreck and saw the vehicle flying through the air, estimating it was traveling about 100 mph, the report said.

Woodall’s vehicle drove through at least three yards, damaging yards and driveways, before flipping and striking a tree and a parked car, the report said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating and also believes alcohol was a factor in the crash, Sheriff Doug Cox said.

The loaded gun found next to the vehicle was taken from Woodall’s father’s home, Cox said.
