Fatal accident on State Road 144

Two people were killed in separate vehicle crashes in Johnson County on Monday.

A man died after a one-car crash on Monday evening on Old U.S. 31 in the Amity area, Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said. The man’s name and other information about the crash was not available on Monday night.

Earlier in the day, one man was killed and another was taken to the hospital after a crash west of Franklin.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and firefighters were called to an accident on State Road 144, near Hopewell, just after noon Monday.

The sheriff’s office still is investigating but has learned so far that Raymond Cook, 54, Martinsville, was heading east on State Road 144 toward Franklin and crossed the center line, striking a vehicle driven by Donald Watson, 64, Plainfield, who was headed west toward Bargersville, Sheriff Doug Cox said.

Watson was pronounced dead at the scene, Cox said.

Cook was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. Information on his condition was not available Monday afternoon, Cox said.

Once the investigation is completed, the information will be sent to the Johnson County prosecutor to determine what, if any, charges should be filed, he said.

The accident closed State Road 144 for a few hours Monday.
