Vehicle involved in hit and run found

Investigators have found the vehicle they believe struck a woman walking in a Center Grove area neighborhood and are now looking for more evidence.

A tip to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office led police to the vehicle in the Center Grove area, near the Carefree North subdivision, Sheriff Doug Cox said.

The owner of the vehicle is not cooperating with investigators, he said.

Investigators believe it is the vehicle from the crash based on evidence found during a search on Thursday, Cox said. He declined to give specific details on what was found.

Linda Gaither, 70, was struck while walking in the neighborhood near Fairview and Peterman roads on Monday night. Witnesses saw the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road and said it nearly hit another couple that was walking that night. Gaither was struck from behind and knocked out of her shoes. She was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

On Wednesday, investigators released video of the vehicle in the crash that was taken from a surveillance camera at a home on Leisure Lane, and then received a tip about a vehicle that matched that description nearby, Cox said. Investigators impounded the vehicle and got a warrant to search it, he said.

Investigators are continuing to work the case, and are seeking more video from nearby homes and businesses showing where the vehicle came from and where it went after striking Gaither, Cox said.

They are seeking any video of the road from the area of State Road 135 and Fairview Road or along County Line Road, near Leisure Lane, to help them see who was driving the vehicle the day of the crash, he said.

“It’s not right this lady was struck, on the wrong side of the road and the person didn’t stick around. We are doing our best to get her justice,” Cox said.
